In the Middle Ages map makers moved to the 16 point rose complaining that sailors didn't have the education to understand the 32
point design. The 16 point rose has the uncomfortable number of 22 1/2° between points, but is easily found by halving divisions &
was simpler for those not using a 360° circle. Today all Chart Roses whether 8, 16 or 32 points are referred to as a Compass Rose.
This 16 point Compass Rose Inlay shown above is called the "Vanessa". The woods used above are Mahogany, Maple & White Oak. Below are several color variations of the same Inlay. Please click any of the pictures for close ups.

Compass Rose Styles
A compass rose is a figure showing the orientation of the cardinal directions, North, South, East & West on a map
or nautical chart. The "rose" term comes from the compass points fairly ornate figures used with early compasses.
The idea for the Compass Rose came from the Wind Rose which had 8 points for the 8 main winds. With the advent
of the compass in the 13 century the new rose was broken down into 32 points - the directions of the eight major
winds, the eight half-winds & the sixteen quarter-winds.
